Wash Water Management
What is it?
Since December 2020, the washing of fruits and vegetables on farms is subject to the Regulation respecting the regulatory scheme applying to activities on the basis of their environmental impact (REAFIE). If you wash or prepare the equivalent of 5 to 20 hectares of fruits and vegetables, the regulation applies to you.
In concrete terms, the REAFIE establishes specific norms and requires that you submit, to the Ministère de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs (MELCCFP), a file that includes, among other things:
- The plans and specifications of your installations
- A report, signed by an engineer, describing your washing process and wastewater discharges
To verify if your wastewater complies with regulations, the MELCC will take into account its concentration of suspended solids, its degree of biodegradability and its temperature, among other things.
What’s in it for me?
As a producer, you are already doing a lot to protect the environment. With REAFIE, you are continuing your role as a protector of water and ecosystems.
To facilitate the new regulations’ implementation, the MELCC will determine, for each operation, the requirements and standards it must meet.
Finally, subsidies from the Prime-Vert program and the Programme Services-conseils are available to help implement these new practices.
