Washwater Management
What is it?
Do you wash your fruits or vegetables on the farm? If so, there’s a good chance that your washwater is subject to Quebec’s environmental regulations. Depending on the nature of your operation and your washing activities, you may need a ministerial authorization or a declaration of compliance, or you may have to demonstrate that your facilities are exempt.
These requirements contribute to the protection of waterways and natural environments. Washwater may contain suspended solids, organic residues, or other contaminants that could harm the environment if discharged without proper treatment.
In practical terms, proper management of washwater requires determining the best way for you to collect, treat, and discharge it under the Regulation respecting the regulatory scheme applying to activities on the basis of their environmental impact (REAFIE). Depending on your situation, this may also require preparing a technical dossier for the ministère de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs, including plans and specifications for your facilities as well as professional reports and other documents signed by an engineer.
